Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, possesses exceptional natural features. Its population density is far lower than other regions of Japan, maintaining pristine natural landscapes. Seasonal Features

Spring

Spring arrives about a month later in Hokkaido than in Honshu. Late April to mid-May is the best time for flower viewing. The flower fields of Furano and Biei are among the most popular tourist destinations.

I visited Furano last May to see the lavender, and the purple fields covering the hills were breathtaking. However, I should remind you to check the blooming schedule before going, as flowering times can vary each year due to weather conditions.

Summer

Summer is the best season for outdoor activities in Hokkaido. Compared to Honshu's intense heat of over 35°C, the average temperature here stays between 20-25°C, which is very comfortable.

Last summer, I had an unforgettable hiking experience in Daisetsuzan National Park. Climbing up the mountain trail, the air was so fresh you could smell the fragrance of vegetation. I met several local guides who told me there are over 250 species of alpine plants here, many unique to Hokkaido.

Natural Wonders

Volcanic Landscapes

Hokkaido is an area of frequent volcanic activity, with 18 active volcanoes across the island. The most famous are Mount Usu and Mount Showa-Shinzan.

Mount Usu has erupted 4 times since 1663, each eruption changing the surrounding landscape. A Volcanic Science Museum has been established here, detailing the history of volcanic activity. According to recent statistics, over 500,000 tourists visit annually.

Mount Showa-Shinzan is a geological miracle. It suddenly emerged from flat ground in 1943 and grew to 398 meters high in just two years. Now you can take a cable car to a nearby observation deck for a close-up view of this young volcano.

Hot Spring Resources

When discussing Hokkaido, hot springs cannot be overlooked. The island has over 250 hot spring areas, each with unique water properties and therapeutic effects.

According to the Hokkaido Hot Springs Association, visitor numbers reached approximately 12 million in 2023. The most popular hot spring areas are:

1. Noboribetsu Onsen: about 3 million visitors annually
2. Lake Toya Onsen: about 2.5 million visitors annually
3. Jozankei Onsen: about 2 million visitors annually

Rural Culture

Culinary Features

Hokkaido's local cuisine is known for fresh seafood and agricultural products. The milk, cheese, potatoes, and other agricultural products produced here are of extremely high quality.

According to Hokkaido agricultural statistics, there are over 800,000 dairy cows here, producing more than half of Japan's total milk production. No wonder the ice cream and dairy products here are so delicious.
